The use of bold colour and a striking wallpaper energised a previously uninspiring entrance.
“Our entrance hall was characterless and nothing special,” recalls homeowner Hannelie Strydom. “When we bought the house in Melkbosstrand, Cape Town, we loved the layout but felt that we needed to dress it up to give it warmth. We have two teenage children, Jaime (14) and Keagan (13), so we wanted something fun, eye-catching and modern while still respecting the classical style.”
Hannelie and her husband Rudi commissioned interior decorator Cheryl Herweg of Changing Spaces to help them achieve this.
How this room went from drab to fab:
To create instant impact, Cheryl chose a narrow striped wallpaper from Hertex and used it horizontally. “This also tricks the eye, making the room appear bigger,” adds Cheryl. “We painted the pillars navy blue to match and introduced a grey-washed console table, a glass lamp from K. Light Import and a decorative mirror.” On the opposite side, she added a dark blue chest of drawers with striking handles. “I like to use colour in a small space like this. It adds interest from all angles,” says Cheryl.
“Now my entrance hall is an inviting space that sets the tone for the rest of our house. It really gives the wow factor as you walk in,” Hannelie says.
