The Whale Coast beaches and mountains of the unspoiled Cape Overberg are perfect for those who love to explore nature at its best on horseback. Set in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, the best way to take in the flowers and smells of this botanical wonder is by being “out there”. If you are visiting between July and December, your time will coincide with the migration of the Southern Right Whales, who come to this coastline to mate and calve. Riding along the beach, you could see whales breaching in the ocean less than 100 meters away.
The base camp of the African Horse Company, 180km from Cape Town, is on a private nature reserve, Farm 215, part of the Walker Bay Conservancy and winner of the Cape Fox Award for best management of private land in the Western Cape.
You can choose from outrides of 1-6 hours or multi-day fully catered horse trails on surefooted, South African Crossbreeds perfectly matched to your riding skills, from beginner to expert.
Starting at the base station, the multi-day horse trails of up to 45km a day, move through national parks and nature reserves. Gallop along miles of unspoiled beach, ride dunes, rugged mountain terrain, through streams, wetlands, indigenous forest, fynbos, private farms and vineyards.
A wide array of accommodation is available: from the deliciously luxurious but strictly laid back- sustainable accommodation on our base station, Farm 215, to cottages on our other stations on private reserves in the Overberg and heritage farmhouses within the Agulhas National Park.
Our base station is located in the hinterland of the Danger Point Peninsula, 20 km from Gansbaai and 10 km from the Atlantic Ocean as the crow flies (and bit more as the horse rides).
A two hour drive from Cape Town along the N2 up to the turn off to Hermanus (R 43). After Hermanus, continue to Stanford and onwards to Gansbaai. Alternatively, take the spectacular coastal route to Gansbaai. Before Gansbaai, turn left at the “Grootbos” sign. This road will turn into gravel. Continue to the end of this road. At the T junction, go left. Continue on this road until you see vineyards and a large lake to your left. Once you see the sign “Farm 215”, turn left and follow the signs up to the manor.
Once you make a booking with us, we will provide you with a detailed map and route description.
