The African Window Cultural History Museum in the Pretoria CBD is known for its excellent and diverse displays. It is also variously known as the South African National Cultural History Museum and the Ditsong National Cultural History Museum – with a few variations in-between.
The Museums collections were begun two centuries ago, and vast and detailed exhibitions range from Rock Art displays through to tribal arts and history through to Cape Dutch furniture – with over 5 million objects collected and stored at the museum. The focus is on the history and culture of South Africa, through its many cultural groups, but this includes Stone Age and Iron Age exhibits. ‘Mrs Ples’ – the ancient Australopithecus Africanus skull found at the Sterkfontein Caves in the Cradle of Humankind, is kept here.
The Museum is open 7 days a week, from 8am to 4pm, except between Christmas and New Year, and there is a restaurant and curio shop on site, in addition to an auditorium and conference facilities. To find out more call: 012 3285173 (no website).
