Alberton, with a population of over 200 000, has developed into today’s busy town due to its convenient location for commuters to the major urban areas to the north and east. The large industrial area that was started in 1943, and developed over time, due the re-location of many large manufacturing companies, has also propelled Alberton’s development. There are over 700 companies including the South African Breweries, Sasol, Dulux, Holcim and Ingersoll Rand, which employ over 45 000 people.
Alberton celebrated its centenary in 2005, and has a number of old heritage buildings between the modern shopping centres. The main shopping centres are the Alberton Boulevard which is a pedestrian friendly zone and Alberton City next door, which offers over 4 000 free parking bays and a paying undercover parking area.
The town’s infrastructure offers libraries, clinics, hospitals, schools, entertainment and sports facilities across all the sports. The suburbs range from affordable properties to middle and upper class areas.
The summers are mild with an average of 20 degrees celsius and the winters are cold and dry with an average of 9 degrees celsius. Occasional frost falls between May and August.
The town has multiple access roads to all major freeways in Gauteng, most notably the R59, N3 and N12. Johannesburg is 15 km, Pretoria 76 km and the Oliver Tambo International Airport is 10 km away and transport is serviced by rail, bus and taxi.
