ShowMe South Africa

Altydgedacht Wine Estate, Cape TownAltydgedacht Wine Estate was established in 1698 when Simon van der Stel, signed the title deeds. After the death of the first owner the farm passed through many hands and was finally bought by the Parker family in 1852 who still run the farm to this day.

The first homestead has been replaced but a number of the original outbuildings and the cellar still exist. In fact the cellar is one of the oldest operating cellars in South Africa today.

The restaurant is located in the rustic 300 year old barrel room and is open for breakfast and lunch from Monday to Saturday from 9h00 to 15h00. Pampoenkraal is snuggly tucked away underneath the ancient oak trees of the Altydgedacht Wine Estate in the wine valley of Durbanville. It is a truly outdoor African experience, with an open air lapa for dining, and all cooking done on open fires, creating a truly rustic African atmosphere. Pampoenkraal specialises in Weddings and Private Functions.

As with all wine farms in the Durbanville Valley the cool conditions combined with the red soil and clay base, are ideal for producing top quality wines. Today, a 130 tons of grapes are picked annually with only a small portion being used in the winery. The white cultivars produced are Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Hanepoot, Sauvignon Blanc, Weisser Reisling, S.A. Riesling and Viognier. The red cultivars are Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc, Gamay, Merlot, Shiraz and Pinotage. Viognier and Cabernet Franc are the most recent cultivars to be introduced.
