Unathi Nkayi brings urban sense to everything she does – whether it’s presenting, singing, DJing or just relaxing at home in Jozi.
Describe yourself.
A simple person who finds pleasure in the simple things in life. Love, laughter and humility are important to me.
And your lifestyle?
I’m blessed that my career involves doing the things I love: talking and singing. I travel all around the world but when I’m home, I love spending time with my husband [fellow DJ, Thomas Msengana], who’s my best friend, and our incredible son, Sinako.
What’s your personal style?
It’s classic. I’m not trendy, but I understand my personal style immensely.
Your most prized possession?
My shoes! I’m an avid fan of Christian Louboutin – but I also love my Converse.
Favourite fashion designers?
David Tlale, Sun Goddess, Malcolm Kluk and Gavin Rajah.
Fashion tips of the moment?
If you feel uncomfortable in something, don’t wear it! Find a feature you are proud of, and flaunt it.
Music artists that rock your world?
Bongo Maffin, Brothers of Peace, The Parlotones, HHP and TKZee. Internationally, Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, Donny Hathaway, Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder, Beyoncé and Andrea Bocelli.
Movie of the moment?
Invictus.
Tipple of choice?
Durbanville Hills Merlot, and Vawter. I’m also a bubbly girl, especially Veuve Clicquot and Dom Perignon.
Favourite Joburg restaurant?
The Local Grill in Parktown North.
Favourite party place?
I love house parties. I work in the public eye, so I like letting my hair down in places where no one is going to judge me.
Must-visit Joburg destination?
Panyaza – a chisa nyama in Soweto, for its great vibe and food. It’s easy to find: just drive to Soweto and say ‘Panyaza’ and the people will direct you there.
Best holiday escape?
Anywhere in rural South Africa – whether it’s our family farm in Stekspruit, a reunion in Ecala or a family ritual in Grahamstown. The crowing of the cocks and smelling ubulongo (manure) first thing in the morning, seeing miles and miles of land, or resting in the valleys of the Cape… all restore my soul and make my heart smile.
Your favourite city in the world?
Barcelona. I studied fine art there, as part of my International Media Studies programme. The galleries and museums are fantastic. After lectures, which ended at 10pm, we’d head out for dinner, visit the Champagne bars around the city and then go clubbing all night. We’d watch the sun come up on the beach, head home, shower and rush to make our class by 10am. Those were the days!
What’s your motto?
Right now, it’s ‘Integrity is honour, and honour is something we should all strive for.’
And your message to live by?
Become the change you want in life and the rest will take care of itself.
