Balfour is a small coal mining, gold mining and farming town on the Mpumalanga Highveld, south-east of Heidelberg in Gauteng.
The area around Balfour is popular as weekend getaway for Johannesburg residents, as it is only just over an hour’s drive south, past suburban limits and the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve to a rural area that is scenically attractive, particularly in late summer and autumn when the pink and white cosmos flowers that have become symbolic of the region burst into flower, especially along the roadsides. Besides the maize farms, there are several game farms and country guest lodges in the area.
Getting there: Take the N3 south from Johannesburg, through Heidelburg, then take a left on to the R23 for Balfour.
