Bergkraal 4×4 Route between Klawer and Vredendal

Bergkraal 4x4 Route, KlawerThis circular route, especially beautiful in flower season (from the beginning to end of August or early September) is 54km long and takes 8 hours to complete. Here is a comment by an avid 4×4 enthusiast.  “This was one of the most interesting and enjoyable  trips I have done in a very long time – absolutely fantastic!!! ”

There is a rock art site about halfway with braai facilities and wood is available. Alternatively, just take a picnic to enjoy in this lovely spot.

There are various challenges along the route, but all of them can be escaped. To do this trip, contact Frikkie van Zyl at 083 630 6370 or 027 213 2500 to make arrangements. Motor bikes are also welcome.

In parties of less than 4 vehicles, the route is strictly self-drive. The route is well marked. For larger groups, Frikkie will accompany the party. The entrance gate is virtually halfway between Klawer and Vredendal on the R363, with a large sign for the Bergkraal 4×4 route.  Hennie will meet you at the gate, where, if payment has not yet been made, you can hand over the cash.

Should you wish to overnight in the guest house that accommodates up to 8. You just need to take your food and bedding. There is also a camping area right next to the house with its own ablution block consisting of 2 showers and a toilet. Warm water supply is heated by gas – so there is always hot water available for everybody.

Bergkraal 4x4 Route, Klawer4×4 Enthusiast continues “It is on a farm and the owner and his wife runs it – Frikkie and Hettie van Zyl – the two nicest people I have met in a long time. Everything is guided under “Oom” Frikkie  – but he is a real “bok for sports” – and does all the challenges with us. It consists of a mountain route with plenty of obstacles and challenges, a drag strip where we raced our vehicles together, a sand route (not very long though but plenty challenges) and some serious and very daring challenges and obstacles.

To really make it worth your while though, I recommend this trail for a long weekend setup – we drove the Mountain route and some challenges & obstacles the Saturday – and the sand route and some more obstacles & challenges the Sun – had a lunch time braai at the “grotte”, saw some real boesman paintings there and then did a 300m foefie slide from up the mountain to the bottom!!! EVERYTHING was magnificent and arranged very well!!!
