Birdwatching in the Breede River Valley

Known to be one of the most beautiful regions in the Western Cape the Breede River Valley has much to offer for those seeking to be amazed by the stunning landscapes and wildlife.

Starting at the foot of Bainskloof Pass, the Breede River Valley stretches all the way east as far as Robertson. Tourist attractions for the area include visiting

  • outstanding wine cellars
  • hiking trails
  • birdwatching with species mainly associated with the Karoo and Cape Floral habitats

Bergsig Wine Estate is the starting point where you can see some of the many bird species which inhabit this area. Walk along the walking trail on the farm and you could spot species like the Blue Crane, Cape Sugerbird, Karoo Lark, Grey-backed Sparrowlark, African Black Duck, Sentinel Rock-Trushes and also  some birds of prey and a diversity of waterfowl.

Other birdwatching places to visit include Die Watergat, Jason`s Hill, Grietjiesdrif, Eensgevonden and also the Slanghoek Mountain Resort.

If you take the Scherpenheuwel road towards Robertson you will see lots of waterfowl, different ducks, grebes, teals, egrets, herons and even the African Fish-Eagle.
