Blaauwklippen Wine Estate is one of the oldest in the Stellenbosch winelands having been established in 1682. The estate is very likely the most beautiful in the area with a lovingly preserved manor house and an adjoining “Jonkerhuis” erected more than 200 years ago. It is set on the Blaauklip River on the lower reaches of the Papagaaiberg Mountains.
The estate fell into disrepair until it was purchased by Graham Boonzaaier in 1971. He immediately set about turning the farm into a modern winery and its red Zinfandel has since won numerous awards. The Wine Centre, situated under giant fig trees will catch your eye as you enter the estate – it is here that you can discover the many facets of the Blaauwklippen wines.
Of special interest are the new cellar where the presses begin the process of creating the very special méthode champenoise Barouch sparkling wine, and the coach museum where you can see exhibits of old vintners equipment and an array of old vehicles – old Cape carts, landaus and horse-drawn omnibuses some of which are still in operating condition. The Coachman’s lunch is a must at the Traditional Cape Kitchen restaurant.
