Boplaas Family Vineyards was founded near Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo more than 150 years ago by the Nel family. The farm is situated at the foot of the spectacular Swartberg Mountains in the Southern Cape about 450 Km from Cape Town on the famous Route 62.
Today Boplaas is particularly well known for its ports and red wines and was one of the first wineries in South Africa to export brandy in vats way back in 1880. Their pot stilled brandies have won numerous awards. The Boplaas port has been chosen at various wine shows, such as Platter Wine Guide, Veritas, Peter Shulz Challenge, Wine Magazine and SA National Young Wine Show as the highest scoring port in SA, and for the past six years has been selected for first class flights on SA Airways – Port of the year. An Italian Magazine regards the 1989 Port as SA best port and one of the top 150 wines of the world.
A wide range of quality table wines including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage are also produced and have won many awards. . Boplaas won the SA Champion Sauvignon Blanc at the SA National Young Wine Show in 2009 and 2010
Boplaas supports the Biodiversity Wine Initiative and has been very pro-active in the rehabilitation and conservation of the 2223 Ha of Karoo veldt that they own, going to the extent of patrolling the land to protect the rare succulents.
