Boshof, Free State, South Africa

A destination for hunters, horse lovers and anyone who likes a good steak, Boshof is a fairly large farming community near the Free State’s border with the Northern Cape. The town itself is quite small, but serves a vast farming area with many game farms, sheep farms, cattle ranches and horse studs which breed Arab horses and Appaloosas.

A number of crops are also produced in the area, including wheat, maize and sunflowers, but the dominant economic activity is animal husbandry. Several breeds of cattle can be found here, and Boshof is known for its superb red meat.

There are also many hunting lodges and private nature reserves in the Boshof district, which offer hunting, but also excellent game viewing and birding thanks to the convergence of three different habitats, grasslands, Karoo and bushveld, that together support a wide variety of animal and bird-life.

Activities in the Boshof area are dominated by hunting, but you can also find hikes and walks, horse riding and various other activities on the various game farms and reserves in the area.

Getting there: Boshof is 124 north north-west of Bloemfontein on the R64, via Dealesville.
