Bouchard Finlayson Winery, Hermanus Wine Route, Western Cape

Bouchard Finlayson Winery, Hermanus, Western CapeBouchard and Finlayson is a boutique winery situated in the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) valley near the seaside town of Hermanus. The valley was discovered in the 1970’s to be an excellent wine growing area.

Surrounded by mountains, within viewing distance of the Atlantic Ocean and with perfect clay/shale soils, the valley is perfectly suited for the growing of a variety of cultivars.

The winery was established in 1989 and the architecture of the residence and the cellar is a refreshing departure from the traditional Cape Dutch style while maintaining the Cape vernacular. The vaulted cellar is located under the main residence and is available for small functions. The winery is an interesting thatched roof building surrounded by pergolas to keep the interior cool with stainless steel and concrete tanks.

The estate is well known for the Pinot Noir varietal – the Galpin Peak Pinot Noir is the flagship wine and has won many local and international awards. Pinot Noir is one of the most difficult varieties to grow and quality vintages are difficult to come by. A number of other unusual varieties are grown on the estate. The winemaker seems to enjoy the challenge of producing great wines from these uncommon varieties.

The Bouchard Finlayson winery and cellars are open for wine tastings on a daily basis, Monday to Friday 09h00 – 17h00 and on Saturday 09h30 – 12h30. Closed on Sundays and public holidays.
