The Bush Babies Monkey Sanctuary at the Hartbeespoort Dam near Pretoria offers guided tours through an indigenous forest environment where you can see a variety of free-roaming (and swinging) primates – both indigenous and exotic.
The tours are conducted on the hour from 9am till 4pm 7 days a week on raised wooden walk-ways, bringing you closer to the branches and canopies where the monkeys and other primates go about their daily life.
Species that can be seen include spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys, Madagascan lemurs and the tiny bug-eyed bushbabies that redefine the word ‘cute’. Most of these animals have been rescued from unhappy or unsuitable captive environments and from the pet trade, although some have been born at the sanctuary.
Meerkats and many species of birds can also be seen in the sanctuary, and the natural forested ‘kloof’ (gorge) is a beautiful and peaceful example of the Magaliesberg environment.
This highly professional operation is a must see in the Hartbeespoort district of the Magalies foothills.
Getting there: Take the R512 north out of Johannesburg, past Lanseria Airport. Turn left at the T-junction towards Brits and past the Pecanwood Golf Estate. Turn right at the sign for Brits toward Hartbeespoort and continue on to the bridge over the dam to a T-junction where you will trun right. Continue on this road to a 4-way intersection at Damrodyn, then turn left and travel for 2.5km to the entrance of the sanctaury on the left.
