Carolina, Grass & Wetlands Region, Mpumalanga

Carolina, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Carolina is a small town in the Mpumalanga ‘Grass and Wetlands’ Region, near Chrissiesmeer, Badplaas and Machadodorp.

It is mainly a farming town with a couple of pretty historical buildings, but there is also a small precious stone and coal mining industry. However, the area around Carolina is known for its spectacular scenery and the main draw is the wealth of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed in the town’s vicinity – from hiking trails to 4×4 and quad-bike trails, MTB and horse trails to trout fishing, birding to picnicking and swimming in the nearby Komati River as it flows through the magnificent Komati River Gorge.

The Nooitgedacht Dam Nature Reserve lies just to the north of Carolina and the 5 Assegais Estate with its many hiking trails (including the 5 day Num Num Trail), game viewing and excellent trout fishing is situated only 15km away. San Rock Art can also be found in the area.

Getting there: From Johannesburg take the N12 east, then on to the N4. After 122km turn right on to the N11. At Hendrina turn left on to the R38. Total travelling time is around 3 hours.
