Article from the Experience Overberg Issue 4.
Why wait to celebrate? Every season should be jolly and every blessing counted. Invite your friends and family over, keep it simple, focus on the laughter and…you are good to go!
Forget the fret and fuss! Sunday lunch with family and friends should frankly involve zero stress. If truth be told this is seldom the case so we decided to invite some folk over to a chilled afternoon lunch in the countyside. Follow our 5 tips for a breezy balmy lunch…sorry but someone will still have to wash the dishes!
1. Start with a theme
Do you have a favourite table, bench, tablecloth… Start there. We loved Pierre’s Apple Crate Furniture and so our theme was less formal, more rustic yet beautifully stylish and elegant. Keeping it real and simple was easy with Steve’s real + simple denim place mats which looked über stylish on our table.
2. Colour from the garden
The Overberg is a glorious tapestry of colour wherever you look! Roses, bougainvillea and proteas in all shades of pinks, mauves, reds and whites. We picked a few random bunches and arranged them in all manner of pots, vases, jars and teapots. You would be surprised what beauty they bring to a table. Include colourful fruit and vegetables like aubergines, tomatoes and apples… Al-la-natural is the way to go.
3. Layer it up | Mix and match
Use trays, boards, platters and the like to create a layered three-dimensional look. Try not be too fussy. Different glasses, cutlery, dinner plates, side plates and dessert plates add a fun, vibrant element to your setting. Be resourceful and you will soon have a cohesive look.
4. What was on our lunch menu?
Grilled barbecue chicken, a colourful crunchy salad, tomato and mozzarella salad, grilled butternut, roasted potatoes, crispy ciabata, a selection of cheese from the market, von Geusau chocolate, olives, pesto, cheesecake, chocolate brownies, Bags of Bites biscuits, chilled wine and beer. Remember not to throw away the leftovers – they will make a great snack at dinnertime or can be turned into a fabulous lunch the following day.
5. Don’t forget the music
No celebration would be complete without music in the background. Bring it all together with your favourite tunes and your guests may never want to leave!
Weathered apple crates create a stunning and unique effect – from display units, 3m entertainment tables and benches, upscale bars and more. Each piece has a character all of its own. Made in Greyton, Apple Crate Furniture is a true ‘made far you’ custom built range of furniture that will leave your friends envious. Available through private consultation and appointment only.
