The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department has kicked off its highly anticipated annual youth hiking programme, designed to encourage physical fitness and a deeper appreciation for the great outdoors. This initiative not only promotes healthy lifestyles among young people but also fosters a connection with nature, enhancing their overall well-being.
The upcoming group hike is set for Saturday, 28 September, on the scenic Tafelberg side of Table Mountain, as reported by Cape {town} Etc. After an unusually wet winter that resulted in the closure of many hiking trails on Table Mountain, training sessions were temporarily relocated to Constantia Nek, a popular spot within the hiking community known for its stunning views and accessible trails.
On 21 September, 58 enthusiastic youths participated in a hike led by experienced facilitators and marshals. The participants hailed from diverse neighborhoods, including Ottery, Seawinds, Khayelitsha, and Woodstock, and were part of various after-school programmes throughout the Mother City. These hiking sessions serve as a platform for building camaraderie, encouraging fitness, and instilling a lasting love for the outdoors.
The group embarked on a picturesque route departing from Constantia Nek, winding its way to the tranquil Woodhead Reservoir. Councillor Patricia van der Ross, the Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, expressed her delight at the growing number of young individuals engaging in outdoor activities and embracing the beauty of Cape Town’s natural environment.
Looking ahead, the next hiking event on 28 September will continue to cultivate participants’ skills and confidence in preparation for the main challenge on 26 October 2024. This year’s ultimate test will see teams tackling the highest point of Table Mountain, Maclear’s Beacon, under the supervision of experienced guides to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
This initiative exemplifies the City of Cape Town’s commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles and strengthening community bonds among its youth, all while encouraging them to explore the breathtaking landscapes that surround them.
