Clarens Microbrewery, Clarens, Eastern Free State Highlands

Clarens is home to the first (and still currently the only) microbrewery in the Free State. Started in 2004, the Clarens Brewery now boasts no less than 8 preservative and additive free, full grain, full malt beers and fruit ciders made using crystal mountain spring water from the Maluti Mountains: Clarens Blonde, Clarens English Ale, Clarens Stout, Clarens Red (Ale), and Clarens Red Stone Apple Cider, Sun-Kissed Apple and Deliciously Pink Cherry Cider.

All the Ciders are produced from their own orchards in Clarens.

Only half of all their product (around 5000L per month) is bottled for resale – the rest is available on tap at the brewery.

There are many reasons to get in a car and visit Clarens, and the Clarens microbrewery is definitely one of them. The brewery offers free tastings – quite sure you’ll want to sit down with a draft and enjoy one of the best views of the Maluti Mountains that Clarens has to offer – and it has many.
