Collectors Treasury, Johannesburg CBD

Collectors Treasury, Johannesburg CBD

If you are a book lover, or an intrepid searcher for memorabilia, or just bored stiff with the malls and would enjoy hours of amazing browsing, then the Collectors Treasury in the East End of Johannesburg CBD is made for you. This very unusual family business, run by a pair of brothers, Jonathan and Geoffrey Klass, since 1974, houses so many books that reports quote figures of one to two million – it probably feels like more, as you squeeze past the shelves and piles stacked up on the floor.

There are eight floors – four open to the public – that are bursting at the seams, and although this is the largest resource of first editions, leather bound volumes and rare books in the Southern Hemisphere, there is much more on offer.

The over 300000 collection of vinyls and 78rpm records, on a dedicated floor, has DJ’s frothing at the mouth while frantically searching through the piles for a desired classic. And then you can get side tracked by the other vintage paraphernalia like maps, photographs, old engravings and prints, sheet music, periodicals and newspapers. There is also an extensive range small antiques and collectables, with strong emphasis on the decorative arts 1870-1970.

Looking at this amazing collection, you wonder how you will find exactly what you want, but ask the brothers, they seem to be blessed with memories good enough to take on any elephant and will lead you to the exact title, issue of a boxing magazine or vinyl of your favourite musician.

Take some time out and visit this Aladdin’s Cave, you will not be disappointed.

The treasury is open Monday to Fridays from 09h00 to 17h00 and Saturdays from 10h00 to 13h00.

Collectors Treasury is located at 244 Commissioner Street, Johannesburg.
