Crocodile Bridge was the headquarters of the old Sabie Reserve, and was also one of the first four ranger posts in the park. It’s a camp with a lot of history. It’s a small gate-camp 10km from Komatipoort that overlooks the Crocodile River, and an old railway bridge. The outer bank of the river is commercial farming land that lies outside the park’s boundaries, and may distract from the wilderness experience when viewing the river from the camp.
But, the area within the park close to the camp is game-rich, and there are some excellent drives around this area that don’t venture all that far from the camp. This camp makes for a great start or end point on any journey into the park, and is well recommended for its peaceful nature and plentiful wildlife.
Don’t miss a visit to the Hippo Pools, a small pool on the river where hippos love to sit and wallow. You must be accompanied by an armed ranger – enquire at reception. Bookings and info
Getting there: from Gauteng, take the N4 to Nelspruit. Head through Nelspruit to Malelane and on to Komatipoort (about 110 km). Then turn left onto the R571 just after Komatipoort and head on to the gate. Allow between 5 to 6 hours for the trip to the gate. Crocodile Bridge camp is right at the gate.
