One of the major attractions of De Rust, a small village in the Klein Karoo, 35km from Oudtshoorn, is the stunning trip getting there. Whichever way you drive, the scenery is amazing. If you approach on the N12 from Oudtshoorn, you will travel through beautiful farmlands with a stunning mountain backdrop. The surrounding farms grow fruit, vegetable seed, grapes, dairy, sheep, ostrich and tobacco, and a few produce excellent dessert wines.
If you approach from Prince Albert, you will have the privilege of driving through Meiringspoort, a magnificent cutting through the Swartberg Mountain range, that is the main transport link between Gauteng, the Great Karoo and the Garden Route, via Beaufort West. Stop at the picnic spots for a bite and soak up the surrounds, or take the hike up to the waterfall, with its 60 metre drop to a deep rock pool.
The area’s exceptional plant life includes the well-known pelargonium zonale, that was first collected in Meiringspoort in 1689 by Hendrik Oldenland, and is said to be the ancestor of all geraniums in the world.
De Rust has now been discovered, so the secret of this charming village is out. The town was in fact voted South Africa’s favourite in 2011. The tree-lined streets are fringed by historic Cape vernacular and Victorian styled buildings, which now house all sorts of interesting shops, art galleries, farm stalls, restaurants and gift shops. The Donkey Program has been helping to improve the lives of donkeys in the community. The renovated carts are now being used as a tourist attraction for trips around the village. All cart owners must be a member of the De Rust Donkey club. To take a trip around town in a Donkey cart, make arrangements with the Tourism Office.
The charming vibe, the friendly people and surrounding landscapes have attracted the artist community and film makers alike. At least three full length South African films have been shot here as well as numerous TV features – the latest being a Survivor series for Swedish TV.
Some wine estates have also made a name for themselves, and at Mons Ruber, 11kms towards Oudtshoorn on the N12, not only can you taste a variety of Port, Buchu Brandy, Witblits and their famous copper kettle stilled brandy, but you can take the 1½ hour hiking trail on the farm to explore the famous Red Hills. This is a natural heritage site with red coloured open caves and the only spot in the world where the conglomerate stone, enon, appears above the earth. The trail is not really difficult, but can be slippery after rain. Parking is at the Mons Ruber Wine Estate, where you can get the permit.
The Stompdrift Dam is the largest dam in the Klein Karoo, with a 25km shoreline that cuts into the foothills of the Great Swartberg Mountain Range. Surrounded by pristine hills and unspoilt vegetation, the Stompdrift Dam is home to more than 2 500 plant species. Enjoy watersports, fishing and birding.
