Deetlefs Wine Estate, Breedekloof Wine Route, Western Cape

Deetlefs Wine Estate. Breedekloof Wine Route, Western CapeDeetlefs Wine Estate, situated in the Breede River Valley, is the fourth oldest family owned wine estate in South Africa and has been in the Deetlefs family since its founding in 1822. Restructured in 1992 to form the Deetlefs Wine Group, the winery is a highly sophisticated business controlling the entire process from growing to bottling and marketing.

The Deetlefs vineyards are located at the foot of the Du Toitskloof Mountain range. It is these magnificent mountains that provide the early shadow formations and long cooling period at night. The vineyards benefit from the unique terroir on the banks of the Smalblaar River that forms the one border. These are ideal conditions for enhancing the delicate and complex flavours in the grapes.

The cellar combines the long tradition of winemaking in the valley with modern, state of the art equipment. It has a capacity of 1.8 million litres per annum. Numerous national and International awards have been achieved including the SAA Chief Executive Officer Trophy for the best winery in South Africa with the most listings in 2006/7. Wines were blind-tasted by 12 SA and international wine experts. Only 7% of over 1200 wines were awarded. Deetlefs was also runner up for the SAA Chairman’s Wine Award for the largest volume purchased by the airline.

The tasting facility is open at the following times:

Monday to Friday 08:00am to 17:00pm

Saturdays and Public Holidays 10:00am to 16:00pm
