ShowMe South Africa

On our latest trip from Cape Town, we stopped in Barrydale, the small Karoo town that seems to have established itself as a great place to stop for lunch or snacks on your trip along the R62.

Dotted along the main road, are a number of interesting pit stops. On this trip we noticed Diesel and Creme, and as photographers, were first intrigued by the interesting décor surrounding the building.

Diesel & Creme, Barrydale

We soon found that we were not the only ones clicking away. The owner’s son, Dean, told us that his parents, Arthur and Louise Pharo, had put together the theme of a diner, South African style. Every detail has been attended to, from the outside to the inside, including the restrooms.

Dean, previously involved in marketing in Cape Town, joined his parents as the manager and told us that his main objective was to match the quality of the eating experience to the standard of the décor.

All items on the menu had to be fresh, homemade, and most of all, surprise the diners. Both our meals did just that and at a reasonable price too.

Karoo MoonIf you feel like staying over in Barrydale, the oldest building in Barrydale is right next door to the restaurant – it has been creatively converted by the same expert hand.

Called the Karoo Moon Motel, it has accommodation with 3 bedrooms.
