Doolhof Wine Estate lies in a beautiful valley between the Famous Bain’s Kloof and the Groenberg Mountains near Wellington. The estate takes full advantage of the varied slopes and microclimates to produce a range of wines best suited to the different terroirs. Doolhof is the Afrikaans word for “labyrinth” so named because of the many hills and valleys.
Although the farm has a 300 year history it was only in 1995 that the first vines were planted and in 2003 the current owners built the winery and the tasting room and have since produced some award winning wines.
The original manor house has been renovated and converted into a luxury guest house – the Grand Dédale, located close to Wellington at the foot of the Bainskloof Pass. The deluxe facility offers sweeping views of the valley as well as the Groenberg, Limietberge and Hawekwa mountains.
River Walk & Picnic at Doolhof Wine Estate
Meandering through Doolhof Estate is the picturesque Kromme River. The River Walk, which was created in 2007, allows visitors to enjoy the scenic views on offer at Doolhof. One can follow the meandering path for up to 10 kilometres and stop at any one of the designated picnic sites along the walk. Doolhof, which is known for its mysterious hills and vales, is also home to many small mammals, including buck, porcupine, baboons and even leopard and who knows – you might even come across the Minotaur!
Light lunches and picnics can be arranged by appointment and tasting takes place at the following times:
