Du Toit’s Kloof Pass, Western Cape

du toits kloof

Take the R101 off ramp at Paarl, and follow the old route to Worcester via the 48km, stunning, Du Toit’s Kloof Pass over the mountains. You’ll miss the toll fees, highway traffic and the long Huguenot Tunnel, and the views from the top of the pass are wonderful. Stop and feel free to take some pictures on this much quieter road.

As you drive over the pass, and see the steep cliffs and precipices, it is understandable that South Africa’s master pass builder, Andrew Geddes Bain, thought would be too expensive to build. It is amazing that this task was finally accomplished by 500 Italian prisoners during world war two.

The Krom River Trail is a very popular hike in the Du Toitskloof. The trail distance is 7km (5 hours) and is an easy out-and-back route, to the left, about 7km after the Worcester exit of the Huguenot Tunnel. Park in the parking area and back track about 700m to the trail.

The Elands River Trail is also a pristine scenic 8km trail with an inviting pool. It is found on the Worcestor side of the Huguenot Tunnel, on the right, directly as you exit the tunnel.
