Elgin Valley, Overberg, Western Cape

Grabouw

The Elgin Valley in the Overberg region of the Western Cape is historically the heart of South Africa’s apple industry. Today, many farmers have added vineyards to their apple and pear operations, as the discovery of cool climate wine growing has seen the valley turn into a well-respected wine ward.

Roses are grown everywhere, to warn of soil deficiencies or insect attack, and together with the orchards, especially in spring, make this is one of the most scenic farming areas in South Africa. Add to that the beautiful mountain range, rich protected fynbos, old oak trees and beautiful gardens, it is easy to see why the Elgin Valley hosts a famous “Open Garden Show” in November. During apple-picking season, January to May, the air is sweet with the smell of millions of apples and the packinghouses are the scene of great activity.

The town of Grabouw, in the heart of the Elgin Valley, is the commercial centre, home to the award winning De Oude Molen Brandy Distillery and the Elgin Apple Museum, one of only two in the world.
