Entumeni, Nature Reserve, Zululand

Entumeni Nature Reserve is located about 15 minutes to the west of Eshowe in Zululand. It was established in 1970 to preserve 750ha of a forested gorge and pristine grasslands. The forest is extremely dense and contains some rare trees, many different species of ferns, cycads, clivias and orchids. The area surrounding the reserve is all sugar cane fields making this reserve particularly valuable to preserve some of the original vegetation.

The reserve is an excellent bird watching destination and likely sightings will include African broadbill, black cuckoo, crowned eagle, ground hornbill, Knysna turaco, narina trogon, grey cuckoo shrike, green twinspot and green coucal. Mammals include leopard, bushbuck, bushpig, cape clawless otter, blue duiker, zebra and monkeys.

There are two trails in the reserve and they are not for the faint hearted. They both begin at the picnic site. The uPiti Trail is circular and will take about 2 hours and the Ukhozi Trail will take about 4 hours. Both trails require a high level of fitness.
