Get ready to be blown away by the amazing makeover of Parkdene Boulevard in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni! Coming soon, a shopping experience like no other!
After a significant redevelopment spearheaded by Abland Property Developers and Retail Africa, in partnership with Nedbank CIB and the Ellerine Group, the centre is scheduled to open on 24 October 2024.
This revamp marks a pivotal moment for the region, as the shopping hub expands from its previous 11,000 sqm to an impressive 32,000 sqm. A central focus of the upgrade is the modernisation of the long-standing Checkers Hyper, which has served the local community for years. The redevelopment caters to the growing needs of Parkdene and surrounding areas, which have seen a surge in high-density residential developments, driving increased demand for quality retail options.
Revamped Parkdene Boulevard Set to Open: A New Era for Boksburg Retail
“Parkdene Boulevard’s transformation signals a new chapter for the East Rand’s retail landscape,” remarked Grant Silverman, Director at Abland Property Developers. “We are excited about its potential to meet the evolving needs of the community, offering a fresh and elevated shopping experience.”
Strategically located near major transport routes like the R21 and Rondebult Road, Parkdene Boulevard is easily accessible to both locals and visitors. The centre is also in close proximity to key educational institutions, including Hoërskool Voortrekker, Christian Brothers College, St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls, and Curro Academy Pre-and-Primary School, making it a prime destination for families.
Anchored by flagship stores like Checkers Hyper, Dischem, and Edgars, the centre will offer a diverse range of retail options, including convenient drive-thru outlets. Additionally, landscaped green areas are set to enhance the shopping experience, creating a more inviting environment for customers.
Gauteng’s Unstoppable Mall Growth
Gauteng, though South Africa’s smallest province, remains a powerhouse in the retail sector, boasting an impressive concentration of shopping centres. According to Lightstone data from 2023, the province is home to 50% of the nation’s shopping centres, with 1,800 monitored malls accounting for 32% of the total national mall visit time. This is despite Gauteng housing only 25% of the country’s population.
The province is also home to South Africa’s two largest malls: Fourways Mall and Menlyn Mall. Meanwhile, the Mall of Africa in Midrand ranks as the busiest in terms of visitor numbers and duration per visit, solidifying Gauteng’s dominance in the retail space.
Even as retail expands into rural areas, Gauteng’s mall development shows no signs of slowing down. Notably, the Pan Africa Shopping Centre in Alexandra, Johannesburg, is undergoing an expansion set to be unveiled in October 2024, which will add 10,300 sqm of retail space. Earlier this year, the Castle Gate Lifestyle Centre in Pretoria opened its doors, contributing an additional 24,000 sqm to the province’s ever-growing retail landscape.
As developments like Parkdene Boulevard continue to reshape the region, it’s clear that Gauteng remains the epicentre of South Africa’s mall culture, offering residents and visitors a shopping experience unlike any other.
