Farm Wines and ‘Plaas’ Culture at Die Mas van Kakamas

Die Mas van Kakamas – also called Die Mas Boerdery – is a working farm and vineyard that sells its produce (and that of other farms) though its own deli, and offers Afrikaans Boer culture up on a delicious plate with some boerewors and a ‘brandewyn and coke met eish‘, to be enjoyed on the farm at your campsite…

Quite apart from the cultural flavour, with over 750 farms under vine in the Green Kalahari, you’d be spoiled for choice on where to go to pick up local ‘plaas’ fare and unique wines, and Die Mas van Kakamas is well set up to grab that decision.

As per the website: “Here you will find all the local produce like biltong, raisins, dates, etc. The Groen Kalahari Wyn & Deli is fully licenced and stocks the biggest variety of local beers, wines, and liquor in town. If you are planning your own traditional braai, we’ve got firewood, boerewors, braaivleis, Brandy & Coke and last but not least lots of Ice. As a matter of fact we supply the whole town of ice.”

(Boerewors = farmer’s sausage, braaivleis = meat for the braai (barbie), Brandy & Coke = every saturday afternoon with rugby.  Ice = very necessary, brandy & coke, braais and good times is not the same with out lots of it.)

Die Plaas (Afrikaans for The Farm) also offers farms tours (in a traditional wagon pulled by horses), accommodation and camping.

The Winery on Die Mas Boerdery is open to the public.
