Between Durban’s Bluff and Amanzimtoti there is about 20km of coastline that alternates between rocks and sandy beaches. It is mostly fished by local anglers who catch shad, karanteen, blacktail, stonebream and galjoen.
There is a spot here known as Acid Pipe at the end of the road that runs north along the beach. It produces a variety of small pan fish such as stonebream and blacktail. Moving southwards on the main beach, you can catch shad, kob, and stumpnose from the beaches.
South of Nyoni Rocks, there are two rocky outcrops known as River Rocks and Chain Rocks. Both places produce good catches of shad, mostly caught on spinners.
Tips for fishermen:
The best catches of stumpnose and kob are made at night, while most garrick are caught on live shad.
Getting there: Amanzimtoti is just south of Durban on the N2.
