Clansthal is a small village situated on a long sandy bay on the Umdoni Coast of KwaZulu-Natal just four kilometres south of Umkomaas. It consists of a few holiday cottages and a small caravan park..
Fishing tackle must be bought either in Umkomaas or Scottburgh but bait is available.
You can park reasonably close to the beach, but you will need to walk on paths to gain access to to the fishing spots. It is important not to leave items of value visible in parked motor vehicles and it is inadvisable to fish alone.
Where to fish
At the southern end of the bay you will find the Green Point Lighthouse (a national monument) and at the northern end, Errol Hayes Rocks
Errol Hayes Rocks is often productive when the north easterly winds blow but during winter months this area becomes quite crowded when anglers fish for Shad (elf), Garrick (leervis) and Kob. During the annual Sardine Run King mackerel have been caught from these rocks. Smaller pan fish can be caught closer to shore among the rocks.
Shad (elf) moves along the beach during June, July and August. Kob are also caught from the beach during night.
The shallow gullies among the rocks at Green Point produce Shad (elf) and small pan fish like blacktail, karanteen (strepie) and stonebream. The point itself can only reached via a steep path from the main road.
