Scottburgh is the largest town on the Umdoni Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Anglers can purchase tackle and bait at any number of shops in the town. The town is situated on the Mpambanyoni River. The headland is an ideal fishing spot.
Fishing spots
Black Rocks, at the mouth of the lagoon, is an excellent spot for Shad and Garrick. A few Kingfish have also been caught here during the summer months as well as the occasional Dusky Shark. Eating fish are generally quite scarce in this area.
To the south towards the well-known Cutty Sark Hotel you could catch Natal Stumpnose and Flatfish and Kob from the beach. There is another rocky outcrop called Little Black Rock from where you could catch Shad, Flatfish and Dusky Sharks
At The Point on the south side of the main bathing beach there is a tidal pool making it ideal for family outings. There is sheltered water on the inside where the beach curves to meet the rocks. Shad sometimes move in and around the point here. Live Shad fished off the point can produce catches of Kob, Garrick, Dusky Sharks and the occasional Kingfish.
Around the point, there is a rocky section right in front of the caravan park characterised by gullies and small bays where you will find small pan fish such as Blacktail and Stonebream. Galjoen sometimes move into the gullies in winter.
Golf Rocks, as its name suggests is right on the golf course and is an excellent deep-water spot from where you can catch Shad in winter. Baiting with live Shad could bring in Kob and Garrick.
Tips for fishermen:
Beware of easily snagging your line on the rocks in front of the caravan park. You can’t afford to fish complacently here, or you will lose plenty of tackle.
Getting there: Scottburgh is approximately 60km south of Durban on the N2.
