Fishing at St Lucia, Elephant Coast, Kwazulu-Natal

Shark fishing is popular at St LuciaSt Lucia is the fishing mecca of Kwazulu-Natal. It has a beautiful coastline with wide, unspoilt beaches. The estuary is the major feature of St Lucia, and provides fishermen with the the magnificent opportunity to engage in kite-fishing, rock-and-surf fishing, saltwater fly-fishing as well as estuary fishing from boats or from the shore.

Shark fishing with kite or conventional tackle is quite popular here. Between May and July, shoals of mullet move into the estuary, and live mullet produce some good catches of sharks. Kob and kingfish can also be caught with live mullet, and you can use shad to catch them too. In the later part of the year (between August and November), spotted grunter make their migration into the estuary, and shark fishermen tend to use grunter head as their preffered shark bait.

Tips for fishermen:

Take extreme care when wading in the waters of the estuary, as crocodiles, hippos and sharks are all present.

Getting there: from Durban, take the N2 going north. Turn off at the R618 going to St Lucia.
