FNB Joburg 10K CITY RUN and FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN set to reduce single-use plastic footprint
Following the introduction of a Single-Use Plastic (SUP) Management Campaign at the 5th annual FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN in May this year, the organisers of the FNB Run Your City Series are excited to take their learnings to Johannesburg and Durban where they’ll host the FNB Joburg 10K CITY RUN on Tuesday 24 September (Nation
“The aim of the FNB Run Your City Series’ SUP Management Campaign is to drastically reduce the usage of single-use plastics by 85% at all three events which includes the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN (Sunday 19 May), FNB Joburg 10K CITY RUN (Tuesday 24 September) and FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN (Sunday 13 October ),” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director Stillwater Sports. “Our ultimate goal is to host a mass participation road running series that is plastic free.”
“Single-use plastics are used only once before they are thrown away or, on a more positive note, recycled. These items include plastic bags, straws, coffee stirrers, soda and water bottles and most food packaging,” says Agne du Plessis, Stillwater Sports General Manager: Road Running. “As part of our SUP Management Campaign, we have teamed up with #RunClean and #ICarryMyOwn. We are thankful for the positive manner in which Capetonians welcomed the campaign at the FNB Cape Town 12 ONE RUN. Runners (and walkers) put their DHL water bottles to good use on the day in support of #ICarryMyOwn and #RunClean. Strict ‘litter zones’ were also implemented to ensure a litter-free route. We are excited to take our learnings to Johannesburg and Durban where we’ll implement our campaign at the 4th annual FNB Joburg 10K CITY RUN and 3rd annual FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN. Runners and walkers are encouraged to support our campaign, help keep your city clean and #RunYourCityYourWay.”
