Franschhoek to Make History as First African Host of the Montreux Jazz Festival

The Franschhoek Wine Valley will become the first African destination for the renowned Montreux Jazz Festival, which has delighted music lovers since 1967 in the lakeside town of Montreux, Switzerland. Known for its eclectic programme—spanning jazz, blues, pop and rock—the festival attracts nearly 250,000 attendees annually. After successful editions in Miami, Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro, it will debut in the Cape Winelands in March 2026, with event details to be finalised in late 2025.
“Hosting the Festival in Franschhoek offers a unique opportunity to bridge cultural divides and create meaningful connections between emerging South African artists and the world’s leading musicians and industry figures,” says Mark Goedvolk, Founder of MJF Franschhoek. “My hope is for MJF Franschhoek to stand as a beacon of excellence in hospitality and a vibrant celebration of musical talent, united by the power of music.”
Montreux Jazz Festival CEO Mathieu Jaton adds, “We are honoured to collaborate with local partners who share our passion for live music, creativity and hospitality. This historic first African edition will celebrate the rich culture and stunning natural setting of Franschhoek.”
Over nearly six decades, the festival has hosted legendary performances by Prince, B.B. King, Johnny Cash and Stevie Wonder. Its expansion into Franschhoek not only underscores the festival’s global stature but also highlights the Cape Winelands’ emerging role on the international cultural stage.

Ruth McCourt, CEO of Franschhoek Wine Valley, reflects, “This milestone elevates not just our valley but the entire continent, showcasing African arts to a global audience.” Following a scouting visit in January, the festival’s planning committee confirmed Franschhoek’s vineyards, estates and amphitheaters as the ideal backdrop for the 2026 celebration.
The festival will also partner with the Uncorked Music Academy at the local high school, aligning with the Montreux Jazz Artists Foundation’s mission to nurture emerging talent through education and cross-cultural exchange. This collaboration reinforces a shared commitment to social responsibility and inclusive communities.
Franschhoek Tourism is now inviting proposals for headline sponsorships, media partnerships and more. Interested parties should contact CEO Ruth McCourt at ceo@franschhoek.org.za. For broader event inquiries, please reach out to billy@matriarch.co.za.
As planning progresses, Franschhoek is poised to solidify its reputation as a premier international events destination. The arrival of the Montreux Jazz Festival on African soil marks a pivotal step in amplifying the global profile of African arts—and paves the way for future cultural collaborations and success stories
