South Africa

Your world in one place

Free State Province

The Free State Province of South AfricaThe Free State Province of South Africa is known for its endless fields of maize, wheat and sunflowers, small ‘dorpies’ (‘one-horse’ towns and villages) with pretty 19th century sandstone homes and buildings, magnificent churches, windmills, cattle, sheep and San Bushman Rock Art.

Free State Province, South Africa

This central province of South Africa was long ago robbed of its huge herds of game and the predator species that depended on them. Though game have been returned in a few reserves and conservancy areas, the Free State is South Africa’s bread-basket, and farming rules…no Big 5 Safaris are on offer here, but another part of the Free State, the Free State Highlands area which borders the Maluti Mountain Range offers a tourism experience of equal proportions.

Golden Gate

The Free State Highlands are all magnificent sandstone mountains, more endless empty roads, cosmos flowers in summer and snowy lansdcapes in winter, cherry orchards and asparagus fields, hiking, horse-riding, mountain-biking, 4×4 and motorbiking through small mountain foothill towns like Clarens and Ficksburg. The same beautiful chuches and sandstone buildings, but cooler air, a more interesting skyline, and ‘another world’ beloved of artists and photographers. This latter part of the Free State boasts the only National Park in South Africa proclaimed to conserve extraordinary scenery as opposed to wildlife – the Golden Gate National Park.

On the other side of the Province the less aesthetically pleasing but geologically interesting Vredefort Dome area, inclusive of a section of the Vaal River that borders the Northern Free State , offers plenty of outdoor activities including white-water river rafting.

Gariep Dam, Free State Province

The very south-western section of the Free State Province offers watersports and other activities at the biggest man-made reservoir in the Southern Hemisphere – the Gariep Dam.
