
George Community Rallies for Collapsed Building Rescue, and the K9 Units have been mobilized as well.
Dr. Imtiaz Sooliman, founder of Gift of the Givers, emphasized the crucial role of sniffer dogs in the search and rescue operation at the collapsed building in George. Local residents have rallied to provide essential supplies and assistance for both human and K9 teams involved in the rescue efforts.
The George community has swiftly mobilized to aid the rescue operations at the site of the building collapse on Victoria Street, extending support to the K9 units pivotal in locating trapped individuals amidst the debris.
Mariann Wilson, a dedicated volunteer with the K9 Search and Rescue Association of South Africa, arrived in George with her K9 partner, Echo, promptly joining the search for survivors. Wilson expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received from the community, highlighting its tremendous impact.
Due to the continuous movement of heavy machinery for rubble removal, the public has been urged to avoid the Victoria Street collapse site.
The ongoing rescue operation necessitates the removal of 3,000 cubic tons of concrete from the site, reflecting the extensive efforts underway.
At the time of the incident, 81 individuals were on-site, with 37 retrieved so far. The breakdown of patient conditions includes 8 deceased (blue), 16 critical (red), 6 with life-threatening injuries (yellow), and 7 with minor injuries (green). Additionally, 44 individuals remain unaccounted for.
As of 12:00 on 9 May, the rescue operation has spanned 70 hours, showcasing the ongoing commitment and dedication of the rescue teams.
