Gerda Steyn Makes History with Fourth Comrades Marathon Title
In a breathtaking display of stamina and strategy, South African ultramarathon star Gerda Steyn claimed her fourth Comrades Marathon title on Sunday 8th of June 2025, further cementing her status as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
Clocking in at 5:51:19 over the grueling 89-kilometre “down” run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, Steyn not only clinched her third consecutive Comrades victory but also joined an elite circle of four-time champions—now tied for the most wins by a South African woman in the event’s 103-year history.
“I had to fight for this one. The competition was fierce, but that’s what makes the victory sweeter,” Steyn reflected after the race.
Strategic Brilliance on the Road
Unlike some of her previous dominant wins, this year’s edition demanded more tactical nuance. Zambia’s Elizabeth Mukoloma set a punishing early pace, forcing Steyn to bide her time through the first half of the course. The decisive moment came around the halfway mark when Steyn surged forward, overtaking Mukoloma with precision and composure.
From there, she extended her lead, but not without pressure. Russian ultra-specialist Alexandra Morozova, a perennial podium contender, kept within striking distance, eventually finishing roughly four minutes behind.
“Having Alexandra there pushed me. It made me work harder and stay sharp throughout the race,” Steyn said.
A Legend in the Making
With this latest win, Steyn not only strengthened her reputation in the Comrades Marathon but also in the global ultrarunning scene. Her name now sits prominently next to Russia’s Elena Nurgalieva, who holds the all-time women’s record with seven wins.
In addition to her Comrades triumphs, Steyn has been untouchable at the Two Oceans Marathon, having won it six times consecutively. Her dominance across both prestigious events has earned her the moniker “South Africa’s Ultramarathon Queen.”
What’s Next for Gerda Steyn?
While Steyn remains tight-lipped about her future race plans, whispers of a potential world record attempt or international ultra-circuit campaign are growing louder. With her unmatched work ethic, mental toughness, and unshakable passion, the running world will be watching her next move closely.
One thing is certain: Gerda Steyn has redefined the limits of endurance, and she’s not done yet.
