Gerda Steyn Sets New Comrades Marathon Record

Gerda Steyn has done it again. On Sunday morning, she broke her own Comrades Marathon record by nearly 10 minutes, setting a new benchmark in her third ultra-marathon of the year.

Steyn’s relentless spirit and determination were on full display as she completed the grueling Up Run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg in 5 hours, 49 minutes, and 46 seconds. This incredible achievement shattered her previous record of 5:58:53 set in 2019.

“I am speechless once again today. It is the best day of my life,” Steyn exclaimed with joy after crossing the finish line.

Her victory was not just a personal triumph but a moment of pride for South Africa. “For South Africa, I was carrying the thought of everyone watching the race today from start to finish. It carried me, so thank you, everybody,” she added.

Leading the women’s field throughout the 85.91km race, Steyn ran nearly unopposed, showcasing her exceptional endurance and strategic planning. “I do feel like my plan worked really well,” she said. “I’m quite particular when it comes to planning. I know where I want to be at certain spots.”

With this latest record, Steyn continues to solidify her place as one of the greatest marathon runners of our time.
