Van der Stel Pass, Bot RiverOwner Elreda Pillman runs Goedvertrouw Wine Estate, on the Van der Stel Pass between Botrivier and Villiersdorp. The historic farm has a house built in 1820, now the Bed and Breakfast, and the wine cellar still has the original ‘skietgatte’ used during the Anglo Boer War. Elreda lovingly handcrafts four cultivars, from the skilfully fashioned Pinot Noir to the wildly experimental Pardoemps – a blend of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage.

The B&B, one of the oldest houses in the area, has a slave bell, once used to call the slaves or herald the incoming train, but now only summons the geese, lambs, pigs and cattle, if only they would listen! Contemplate the lovely view down the valley, with early morning coffee, or walk in the beautiful garden and listen to the birds.

Enjoy Elreda’s homemade meals, served on the veranda in summer, or, in winter, in the cosy tasting room or homestead’s lounge next to an inviting fire. Don’t leave without a block of farm-churned butter, a loaf of freshly baked bread and a case of hand-bottled, hand-labelled wine.

Tel/Fax: 028 284 9769: Booking Essential. No credit card facilities so cash or internet transfer is preferred. From Bot River Village, take the Van der Stel Pass Road.
