Your bedroom should be the most tranquil room in the house – and even more so in winter. Take inspiration from these stylish spaces to transform yours into a chic and cosy haven during the cold months
Moody Hues
Deep dramatic shades and layers of texture add comfort and style to this Cape bedroom
Monochromatic in various shades of grey, this guest bedroom with an open-plan bathroom in Blouberg, Cape Town was designed for comfort. “While the owners’ brief was to stick to a one-colour scheme, I wanted to create a glamorous space – a guest room that feels better than a hotel suite,” says interior designer Cheryl Herweg of Changing Spaces.
Cheryl created a cosy effect by layering various luxurious, textured fabrics, including flocked damask wallpaper, which extends into the bathroom. Beautiful crystal pendants on either side of the bed add to the overall ambience, while a combination of sheer and heavy curtains in an opulent fabric keeps this room snug and relaxing at all hours.
“Thanks to the neutral palette there is nothing jarring in this room, and that’s what makes it feel so comfortable,” says Cheryl.
Contemporary warmth
Calm and peaceful, this bedroom was designed to soothe the soul
For this renovated Morningside home, interior designer Jeanne Stravino of Room 31 created a contemporary, yet inviting master bedroom. “My client wanted a serene, uncluttered space that was also warm and cosy during winter. Our starting point was cladding the main wall in flooring planks, which adds interesting texture and emphasises the long, low shapes of the bed and headboard.”
Jeanne then added a deep-pile charcoal carpet to bring a sense of luxe and quiet to the room. “The palette is intentionally calm and monochromatic which suits a modern space. Simple shapes also help to reduce visual clutter. With that in mind I chose a wide linen headboard, ceramic dome pendants and Ducoed bedside tables which conceal phone and tablet chargers.”
“It’s extremely comfy and luxurious without being fussy,” says the owner. “We love the recessed lights which allow for easy reading without disturbing your partner.”
Relax and restore
Glam fabrics and a fireplace make this room a luxe retreat in winter
“Our clients wanted a bedroom where they could also relax in comfort while watching TV,” says interior designer Marlene Stroebel of Legend Designs. The classically modern Jo’burg home was designed by J VR Architects, and the raftered ceilings and white shutters create a calm and versatile backdrop. “The room is large and airy,” adds Marlene, “so we created a cosy hub that’s intentionally separate from the bed, and custom-designed two oversized chairs to face the TV and fireplace.”
Working in a serene palette of aqua and cream, Marlene also designed the chaise longue at the foot of the bed, adding a deep-pile carpet from Bakos Brothers. “The cream velvet on the furnishings added a sense of texture and luxury, and we kept the look quite simple with a plain fabric on the custom-made headboard.” Subtle patterns were introduced in the scatters, and Marlene used mirror-clad pedestals for a hit of glamour. “The result is very much like a personal suite, and that’s what the owners love most about it.”
