Grass and Wetlands Region, Mpumalanga

The Grass & Wetlands Region lies just south of the Highlands Meander Region of Mpumalanga, and is known as South Africa’s Lake District. At the centre of this green and lush mountain foothill region, the town of Chrissiesmeer lies on the banks of Lake Chrissie – the largest natural freshwater lake in the country.

This region is a birding paradise thanks to the hundreds of small lakes and wetlands that dot the landscape in the region around Chrissiesmeer. One of the most important of these is the Wakkerstroom Wetlands Reserve.

Another primary attraction is the sulphur spring at Badplaas which is utilized by the award-winning Forever Resorts Badplaas Resort and Hydro which is a very popular destination for families and corporates alike.

The rolling hills and mountain scenery offer mountain-biking and hiking in superb, peaceful and beautiful surroundings, and the beauty of the area supports many country guesthouses in or between a number of very small villages and hamlets. There are several mines and powerstations in the area (such as around Ermelo), but it is predominantly a sheep and cattle farming area and very rural and open.

The area bordering Swaziland is forested, with pine, bluegum and wattle plantations. Here you will find the historical town of Piet Retief.
