Hartbeespoort Dam is the centre of a very pretty holiday resort town in the Magaliesberg foothills of the North West that consists primarily of waterside holiday homes, accommodations, camping spots and lifestyle estates, just north of the border with Gauteng.
Only 30 minutes drive from Pretoria, Hartbeespoort Dam is a favourite weekend break for ‘Gautengers’, and offers many attractions – from all kinds of water sports to animal parks and sanctuaries, markets, country accommodation and relaxation. It is also en-route to the Magaliesberg and the North West town of Rustenburg – itself en-route to Sun City.
Tourist attractions surrounding the Hartbeespoort Dam include the Ann Van Dyk Cheetah Centre, the Hartbeespoort Elephant Sanctuary and the Bush Babies Monkey Sanctuary. For children, the Hartbeespoort Aquarium and the Hartbeespoort Snake and Animal Park offer animal encounters. Other attractions include the Welwitschia Country Market, booze cruises and watersports on the Hartbeespoort Dam and horse-riding in the Magaliesburg foothills. The De Wildt Herbal Centre is one of South Africa’s famous gardens.
Getting there: From Johannesburg take the R511/N14 north out of Sandton.
