Heidelberg, Garden Route, Western Cape

Heidelberg lies between the Langeberg Mountains and the Indian Ocean at the beginning of the Garden Route in the Western Cape, South Africa. Located on the Duivenhoks River the town has a real country feel about it and is a haven of tranquility for people looking for a country escape. This was not so in 1901 when a great battle was fought here between the British and the Boers in the Boer War.

As with most towns in this area the Dutch Reformed Church played a large role in its growth and this beautiful church is the hub of the town.

The Algeria campsite at Algeria in the Cederberg could easily be said to be the most idyllic camping experience in this wilderness
Anysberg nature reserve (Western Cape)
The horsy highlight of Anysberg is the two-day trail, sleeping overnight in huts or under the stars. The ride is about three hours to Tapfontein and two hours back the next day.
