Herold Wines, Klein Karoo Kannaland Wine Route, Garden Route

Herold Wines, Karoo Kannaland Wine Route, Garden RouteHerold Wines is situated in the most unlikely place on the spectacular Montagu Pass in the Outeniqua Mountains near the Garden Route town of George in the Southern Cape although it forms part of the Klein Karoo Kannaland Wine Route

The vineyards are planted on the sunlit northern slopes of Cradock Peak, the highest of the mountain range. At 600 to 700 metres above sea level the vineyard is among the highest in South Africa – the cool summer weather and the icy winter frosts and snow result in a protracted growing season.

The conditions are similar to the burgundy area of France and therefore ideal for growing Pinot Noir varietals which were planted in 1999. Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon have also been planted. Because of the altitude and the long growing season Herold wines are truly unique.

The farm is bounded on three sides by the Outeniqua Nature Reserve and is a perfect starting point for hikes through the beautiful mountain fynbos. Cycle on the farm roads, mountain passes and trails, bird watch or photograph mountains and fynbos and swim or paddle in the dam or in the river pools. Walk along the farm roads and fynbos paths or through the vineyards.

Light lunches and teas are served and picnic baskets can be prepared. Wine tasting takes place in the working cellar from 10h00 to 16h00 Monday to Saturday.
