Highmoor is part of the Mkhomazi Wilderness Area in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park. This nature reserve is 15000 Ha in extent and is well known for its diverse range of endemic species and rich biodiversity. Wildlife that occurs in the reserve includes species such as grey rhebuck, Cape clawless otter, common and mountain reedbuck, eland, grey duiker, oribi, mongoose and baboon.
The vast rolling plains set against the backdrop of the dramatic Drakenberg Mountains, rivers and deep gorges has created a spectacular natural landscape. Two well-stocked trout dams are available for fly-fishing only form 1 March – 31 June and 1 September – 31 December. A daily rod fee is payable at the park office.
