Highmoor is part of the Mkhomazi Wilderness Area in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park. This nature reserve is 15000 Ha in extent and is well known for its diverse range of endemic species and rich biodiversity. Wildlife that occurs in the reserve includes species such as grey rhebuck, Cape clawless otter, common and mountain reedbuck, eland, grey duiker, oribi, mongoose and baboon.
The vast rolling plains set against the backdrop of the dramatic Drakenberg Mountains, rivers and deep gorges has created a spectacular natural landscape. The rock shelters house the best examples of San rock paintings south of the Sahara. There are numerous walks and excursions in the reserve and a picnic site near the park office.
Two well-stocked trout dams are available for fly-fishing only form 1 March – 31 June and 1 September – 31 December. A daily rod fee is payable at the park office.
Directions: From the N3 (south) turn off at the Nottingham Road off-ramp and proceed to Rosetta, through Nottingham Road. From Rosetta take the Kamberg-Giant’s Castle road for 31 km where a signboard, 200 m beyond the Kamberg sign, indicates the route to Highmoor. Travelling from the north on the N3, turn off at Mooi River then to Rosetta and thereafter as described.
