Hiking in Injisuthi, Estcourt, uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park

The Injisuthi Triplets, Injisuthi Valley, uKhahlamba-DrakensbergMafadi Peak (3446m) and Injisuthi Dome (3379m) are South Africa’s two highest peaks, and form an impressive backdrop to the Injisuthi Valley in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park. To the northwest of this valley, lie the ever-popular landmarks of the Drakensberg: Monk’s Cowl, Champagne Castle and Cathkin Peak.

There are five trails in the area, ranging from 2.5 to 15km and spanning from 1hour to overnight.

The Grindstone Caves trail is a 6km, 3hr trail that meanders through a yellowwood forest an up mountain slopes and sandstone cliffs before reaching the caves. Return on same route.

Cataract Valley is an extension of the Grindstone Caves trail and adds another 13 Km and 5 hours to the hike. Circular route.

The Essential InjisuthiVan Heyningen’s Pass is a favourite walk in this region. On this 8km, 3hr trail, hikers are rewarded with spectacular views of Monks Cowl and Champagne Castle. Return on same route.

The guided Battle Cave hike is a 15km, 6hr trail that owes its name to a rock-art scene depicting a battle between two San clans. Circular route.

Trail info: An entrance fee is required into Giant’s Castle Game Reserve. No permit is required for hiking. Maps are available from the Reservation Office. There are self-catering cottages and camp sites at Giant’s Castle.

Getting there: from Durban, take the N3 to Estcourt. Here, follow signs to the Giant’s Castle Game Reserve and Injisuthi Camp.
