uitsoek trail on the way up This 25-km, 2-day trail traverses deep valleys and high mountains, from the foothills of the Drakensberg to the Escarpment and back. The trail passes through montane grassland, pine plantations and beautiful indigenous forests.

Highlights along the trail include the prolific bird life, with more than 100 species having been recorded in the area. There are some precious mammals up for spotting along the trail as well, and you may catch a glimpse of the Oribi, a very rare antelope, and the elusive Cape clawless otter.

* There is no electricity along this route. Hikers MUST bring their own gas stoves.

Getting there: from Johannesburg, take the N12 going East to Witbank. Here, take the N4 towards Nelspruit. Continue on the N4 until you get to the Sabie turn-off (R539). Turn left at the R539 and follow the road until it becomes a dirt road. After about 10 km, turn right at the Uitsoek Hut sign. Keep on this road until you reach the Uitsoek Forest Plantation.
