Hiking Trails and Birding at Langrietvlei Farm, Hopefield

On the farm Langrietvlei, 22km from Hopefield, on the Velddrif road, are two hikes along the Berg River. Set amongst the fynbos, the terrain turns into a spring flower paradise.

The 1715 farm homestead has been declared a national monument and is the starting point of the two circular hikes.

The Helderwater Trail mainly follows the Berg River, with good birding. 10km, 3 hours.

The Langrietvlei Trail meanders along the Berg River past a tidal pan with excellent birding. Huge flocks of flamingos can be seen at Pink Pan, which normally has water up to January while the seasonal pans begin to dry up in Mid-October. 20km, 6 hours.

The Berg River, along which the hikes meander, is tidal, and the sea pushes up 10km from the river mouth to the tidal pool near the farmhouse. The area is a natural wetland, and can be flooded by the Berg River in the rainy season from April to November.

Some visitors enjoy the birding as part of the hike, as the bird populations are prolific, especially in summer.

At times, mountain bikes and quad bikes are allowed on the trails, but you must bring your own.

Both sea water and fresh water fishing are available. The river is also suitable for swimming, and a kayak is available as an alternative to exploring the area.

There are luxury, fully equipped, self-catering chalets that sleep 6 to 10 people. Contact Fiona for booking a hike or accommodation. (022) 783 0856: E-Mail.

Take the N7 to Malmesbury and continue to 5km to the Hopefield turnoff. From Hopefield town, take the road to Velddrif, and continue for 25kms.
