The golden sandstone cliffs of the Clarens area have a beguiling presence that will reward the effort of hauling out your boots and pack.
The Lesoba hiking trails are in the foothills of the Maloti Mountains close to the Caledon River, the border of Lesotho. The area has breathtaking sandstone cliffs incised by steep gullies which mountain streams have carved over millions of years.
In the past few years, the area has become a favourite destination among hikers seeking a destination within easy reach of Gauteng, Bloemfontein and KwaZulu-Natal.
The trail network is on a cattle farm reached by way of a well-maintained farm road. It consists of two fairly demanding day trails, plus an easy stroll along a stream. Walks of 10, nine, seven, six and five kilometres respectively will find you back at your starting point at the farm.
Be prepared for some steep ascents and descents as the trails take every opportunity to explore the rugged nature of the farm. The rewards are awesome views across the Caledon Valley into Lesotho and startling rock formations, such as the Queen Victoria, which provides photographers with magical subject matter.
The crisp light of dawn highlights the golds and blacks of towering sandstone cliffs that backdrop the trails, so an early start is advisable. In common with other trails in the area, there is little tree cover and daytime temperatures can push into the mid 30s. The region is also not over-endowed with a supply of natural drinking water, so remember to carry at least two litres on the hike.
